ICAR–KVK Nimbudera Hosts Training on Modern Paddy Cultivation Techniques.

Modern Paddy Cultivation Techniques: Empowering Island Farmers.

To support and uplift local farming communities, ICAR–Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Nimbudera, recently held a three-day training programme titled “Modern Agricultural Techniques for Paddy Cultivation” from August 21 to 23 at Samiti Hall, Rangat. The initiative aimed to equip farmers with the latest scientific knowledge and hands-on skills to boost paddy productivity in the unique island environment.

The event was inaugurated by Shri Balamurugan, Pradhan of Parnasala Panchayat, who served as the Chief Guest. In his opening remarks, he stressed the importance of embracing sustainable and science-based farming methods to improve yields and ensure long-term profitability.

Dr. V. Damodaran, Senior Scientist and Head of KVK Nimbudera, spoke about the critical role paddy plays in food security and livelihoods on the islands. He highlighted how modern agricultural practices can help farmers tackle challenges like limited resources and unpredictable weather, ultimately leading to better productivity and resilience.

Smt. Shirley Thomas, Assistant Director of Agriculture, introduced participants to various government schemes designed to support farmers, with a special focus on the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY), which offers financial protection against crop losses.

Mr. Rakesh Dawar, Subject Matter Specialist (Agronomy), led an in-depth session on best practices for paddy cultivation tailored to island conditions. He covered improved techniques for seed selection, nursery preparation, and transplanting, and emphasised the importance of integrated nutrient management using organic manures. Farmers also learned to identify nutrient deficiencies and physiological disorders in paddy crops. A live field demonstration on using the Conoweeder added practical value to the training.

Er. Manoj Kumar, SMS (Agricultural Engineering), discussed how mechanisation can ease labour, save time, and increase efficiency in paddy farming. Mr. Subam Debroy, SMS (Aquaculture), introduced the concept of paddy-cum-fish culture, while Mr. Yatharth Sharma, SMS (Home Science), shared insights on post-harvest processing and value addition.

A total of 31 farmers and farmwomen participated in the programme, gaining valuable knowledge and skills to enhance their farming practices and livelihoods.
